The ECHL has suspended former Jacksonville Icemen ahead Jacob Panetta for the rest of the season for a "racial gesture" directed towards South Carolina Stingrays defenceman Jordan Subban in a recreation on Saturday.
The suspension quantities to 38 video games.
The league mentioned in an announcement that Panetta can apply for reinstatement after March 17 pending profitable completion of an training program carried out together with the NHL Participant Inclusion Committee.
Panetta made the gesture towards Subban, who's Black, throughout an altercation in the beginning of extra time.
Video posted on Twitter by Subban's brother, New Jersey Devils defenceman P.Ok. Subban, reveals Panetta taking a monkey-like pose whereas Jordan Subban is being led away by an official. Jordan Subban then skates again towards Panetta and the 2 lock up initially of a multiplayer skirmish.
In a put up on his Twitter account, Jordan Subban mentioned Panetta "was an excessive amount of of a coward" to battle him.
"As I started to show my again he began making monkey gestures at me so I punched him within the face a number of instances and he turtled just like the coward he's," Subban posted.
Panetta posted a video on Sunday, saying he "did a tough-guy bodybuilder-like gesture" that he mentioned he is made to different gamers in different video games.
The ECHL provisionally suspended Panetta on Sunday pending the results of an investigation, whereas the Icemen launched him.
"Insensitive actions and gestures, no matter intent, can't be tolerated in our recreation", ECHL commissioner Ryan Crelin mentioned in an announcement launched Thursday.
"All of us must study and develop from this incident, and stay steadfast to additional educating and advancing our dedication to range, fairness and inclusion all through our league."
