NDP MPs table private bills to improve accountability of Canadian companies abroad

OTTAWA --
Two New Democrats tabled laws right this moment that might make Canadian firms extra accountable for human rights abuses and environmental harms overseas.


NDP MP Peter Julian says Invoice C-262 would create authorized instruments, giving victims of human rights violations by Canadian firms overseas recourse in Canadian courts.


NDP overseas affairs critic Heather McPherson says Invoice C-263 would give the company duty watchdog the facility and tooth to research wrongdoing by Canadian firms.


Catherine Coumans, analysis co-ordinator at MiningWatch Canada, says it's time for the Canadian authorities to give up stalling and caving to the mining business foyer, and implement these payments.


The Liberal authorities appointed the primary Canadian Ombudsperson for Accountable Enterprise in 2019.


Some critics say the watchdog was not given the correct instruments or powers to carry Canadian firms overseas to account.
