ST ANDREWS, Scotland — With rumours flying about who will be the next player to leave the PGA Tour for LIV Golf, Canadian golf fans don’t need to worry about Corey Conners’ name coming up.
There have been no signs that the top-ranked Canadian golfer would go, but as a top-30 player in the world there’s no question the Greg Norman-led, Saudi-backed tour would be happy to have him.
On Sunday, Postmedia asked Conners if he has any interest in going to LIV Golf.
“No, not really. Life’s so good on the PGA Tour, I’m really happy,” Conners said. “I want to play in events like the RBC Canadian Open, the feeling of playing there is absolutely incredible and you’re certainly giving a lot up if going there so it’s never really been on my mind. I’m intrigued by what’s happening and I can’t blame some of the guys for going, but it’s not right for me.”
Tiger Woods offered a strong opinion on LIV Golf during his press conference at St Andrews, making the point that the pathway for players to work through the ranks only exists in the current professional golf eco-system and Conners very much considers himself a product of that system having played on PGA Tour Canada, the Korn Ferry Tour, and the PGA Tour.
According to Conners, he’s got plenty more to accomplish.
“I want to climb up the world rankings. I got into the top 50, into the top 30, and I want to be a Top-10 player in the world and I see myself doing that on the PGA Tour,” he said. “I’ve got a lot to work for and I’m willing to put in the work and there’s a lot of good things that can happen playing these major championships and playing on the PGA Tour.”
Then there is the limited LIV Golf schedule, which is expected to be 14 events in 2023. That might be a drawing point for some players, but not for Conners.
“I want to play every week, I love to play,” he said. “When I’m home I’m playing or practising.”
