FOREVER FRIEND: Mercedes, with 'a big personality,' wants new home

Don’t mess with Texas.

Mercedes, a one-year-old female Coonhound mix, who came to the Toronto Humane Society in April via an animal rescue in the Lone Star State, is ready for some puppy love.

She was briefly adopted, then returned to the Toronto Humane Society in May “for personal circumstances,” but comes highly recommended.

“She’s very lovely and she’s got a big personality and she’s excited to find her forever home,” said society spokesperson Hannah Sotropa.

“She’s a beautiful girl. She’s very sweet. She’s kind of the best of both worlds. She’s sweet but also a little bit curious. She’s strong and also a little bit playful. Once she’s figured it out she’ll really just become this cuddly lovebug. And she’s keep you on your toes because she’s full of energy. So she’s going to be a perfect summer buddy for whoever’s looking to someone to hit the trails. Be a running buddy, a cottage partner, she can’t wait to just join in on whatever her new family’s going to get up to.”

Now Mercedes, while sounding like a real winner, isn’t perfect.

“She’s a little bit shy with strangers and sudden movement — they’re not her favourite things,” said Sotropa.

“She does get spooked by them. So she does appreciate a slow and considerate approach before jumping in to say hello. But once she’s figured things out and she’s opened up slowly, she does really flourish. She’s a big girl as well so just being mindful if there are young ones around, making sure that supervised interactions are always happening because she doesn’t know her own strength. She’s quite big and she’s a riot. She also loves to play with her toys, especially the squeaky ones, that’s her favourite, and she’ll run around making lots of noise and all of her team describe her as gentle and sweet.”

And Mercedes is healthy, too.

“She doesn’t have any medical issues, which is great,” said Sotropa.

“She does have roundworm now which means she hasn’t had the opportunity much to interact with other dogs. But she has shown a lot of interest towards them. She gets very excited when she’s on her walks and she sees them. So it’ll be important for her new home to consider supervised introductions (to small children), lots of treats, make sure if there’s any other dogs in the home, they meet in a neutral, safe, supervised, controlled setting.”

A home in a rural or urban area is fine keeping in mind, she doesn’t like lots of high traffic areas.

UPDATE: Brick, the year-and-eight-month-old Shepherd-mix, from last month’s Forever Friend column was adopted.
