Hwy. 401 reopens as Durham police storage unit on fire

A large fire that briefly forced the closure of sections of Hwy. 401 in both directions east of Oshawa is a storage building belonging to Durham Regional Police, the Sun has learned.

Sources say the blaze on Courtice Rd. destroyed an assortment of police equipment that included K9 vehicles, the tactical unit’s bomb truck, ammunition, uniforms, incident command truck, marine boat and other new vehicles.

Hwy. 401 has since reopened.

Durham cops said early Sunday night crews were on scene.

Hwy. 401 was closed in both directions between Harmony Rd. in Oshawa and Hwy. 418, Ontario Provincial Police said Sunday night. The southbound lanes of Hwy. 418 were also closed between Regional Hwy. 2 and Hwy. 401.

People were being asked to avoid the area of Baseline Rd. between Courtice Rd. and McKnight Rd.
