The heir to a South Carolina legal fortune is expected to be charged with two counts of capital murder in the 2021 double slaying of his wife and son.
Alex Murdaugh, 54, who is also suspected in the death of his longtime housekeeper and then of scamming her sons in an insurance scheme, is the scion of one of the state’s most powerful families.
He is currently caged in the county jail on fraud and embezzlement charges stemming from the alleged rip-off of millions from his law firm, reportedly to feed his rampaging opioid addiction.
Murdaugh is also charged with insurance fraud for an attempt to stage his own murder so his surviving son could cash in on his $10-million life insurance policy. But Murdaugh’s alleged machinations have all come off the rails.
Wife Maggie, 52, and son Paul Murdaugh, 22, were discovered shot to death at their sprawling family home on June 7, 2021. She was killed with an assault rifle and their son’s death was caused by a blasts from a shotgun.
Alex Murdaugh told cops that he discovered the grisly scene after returning home. No other suspects have been named.
According to media reports, in the months before the shocking murders, society belle Maggie Murdaugh had been planning to pull the pin on their troubled marriage.
One of her concerns: Cheques she doled out at charity functions were bouncing. That was the point she discovered her husband’s alleged pill-popping.
“She confronted him about money more than once and his response was always the same, ‘Leave it to me. I’ll figure it out just like I did the last time,'” a source told the Daily Mail.
An audit revealed that Murdaugh was bleeding money with his bank balances hundreds of thousands in the red. Worse, the family was being sued for the death of a teenage girl who died after being thrown overboard from a boat driven by a drunken Paul Murdaugh.
In the wake of the slayings, Alex Murdaugh begged for the public’s help in solving the heinous double murder.
“I want to thank everyone for the incredible love and support that we have received over the last few weeks,” he said in a statement.
“Now is the time to bring justice for Maggie and Paul. Buster and I, along with Maggie’s mother, father and our entire family, ask that anyone with helpful information should immediately call the SLED tip line or Crime Stoppers.'”
The Daily Mail reports that the family has been notified he will be charged this week and a grand jury is to be shown evidence Thursday.
