Wordle removed “fetus” as Monday’s answer amid the controversy surrounding the leak of the U.S. Supreme Court’s Roe vs. Wade draft opinion.
“We take our role seriously as a place to entertain and escape, and we want Wordle to remain distinct from the news,” the New York Times wrote on its site about Monday’s puzzle.
“This is entirely unintentional and a coincidence — today’s original answer was loaded into Wordle last year,” explained the newspaper, which acquired the game earlier this year from software engineer Josh Wardle.
“Because of the current Wordle technology, it can be difficult to change words that have already been loaded into the game.”
However, “fetus” could not be discarded for all players.
“When we discovered last week that this particular word would be featured today, we switched it for as many solvers as possible.”
So if you play the addictive word game but have yet to submit a guess, you may want to try and make “fetus” your first guess.
This isn’t the first time Wordle has featured two different answers.
In April, the Times announced that it would be removing “potentially insensitive words” from Wordle “in an effort to make the puzzle more accessible.”
Some Wordlers had to guess “stove” while the winning word for others was “harry.”
And, no, it has nothing to do with the ginger prince; rather, according to Dictionary.com, “harry” means, “to harass, agitate, or trouble by or as if by repeated attacks; beleaguer.”
