Ford will unveil its next-generation Mustang in September at the Detroit auto show, according to a report from Automotive News. Citing unnamed sources familiar with the matter, the new pony car is expected to begin production in the first half of 2023 and will feature carryover V-8 and four-cylinder EcoBoost engines.
Ford spokesman Mike Levine declined to comment further on the matter but said the automaker “can’t wait to share more details soon.”
[Update: Ford CEO Jim Farley confirmed on Twitter later that day that the seventh-gen Mustang would indeed bow at the Detroit show on September 14, via a short video clip previewing the car’s exhaust note, and finishing the post with a #SaveTheManuals hashtag alluding to the pony car being equipped with a stickshift.]
In April, leaked images that appeared to have been shot from inside a Ford facility showed off the 2024 Mustang’s face and interior. In June, Ford announced it would build the seventh-generation (2024) Mustang in Flat Rock, Michigan, where the current-gen models are produced.
The current-generation Mustang, which began production in 2015, has been a leader in its segment at a time when interest in muscle cars has waned. However, the automaker hopes recent variants like the Shelby GT500 and Mach 1, as well as the next-generation Mustang, will reignite interest in the brand.
Mustang U.S. sales fell 14 per cent year over year in 2021 to 52,414 vehicles. According to Automotive News, sales have fallen 18 per cent through the first six months of 2022.
The Detroit motor show will be held from September 14 to 25, 2022. It’s the first show in Detroit since January 2019, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The event takes place at Detroit’s Huntington Place Convention Center.
