While both the Yankees and the 9/11 memorial are staples of New York City, they should not intersect.
Fox Sports learned that the hard way after superimposing the logos of the Yankees and Boston Red Sox over aerial footage of the 9/11 memorial pools heading into a commercial break during its broadcast of “Baseball Night in America” on Saturday.
The two reflection pools are on the site where the World Trade Center’s twin towers once stood before collapsing after the Sept. 11, 2001 terror attacks. The names of those killed on 9/11 and also in the World Trade Center bombing in 1993 are inscribed around the pool.
In a statement Sunday to the New York Daily News, a Fox News spokesperson said: “During last night’s telecast, we used poor judgment on the use of a graphic. We sincerely apologize and regret the decision.”
Naturally, people took to social media to voice their displeasure over the cringy lapse in judgment.
“Oh god no,” one tweeted.
“This had to have been approved by MULTIPLE people. What the actual hell,” tweeted another.
“Can someone tell Fox Sports never to do this again? Beyond offensive,” another stated.
