Former Ontario NDP leader Andrea Horwath is expected to address the speculation around whether she will run for the position of Hamilton mayor.
Horwath, who has been known to be considering the possibility, has scheduled a news conference Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. near Hamilton City Hall.
Many political observers, including NDP members, have been openly commenting on a mayoral run since before the June 6 provincial election.
Horwath, a popular figure in Hamilton where she grew up the daughter of a steelworker, has been out and about her hometown in recent days and active in local issues, according to her online posts.
“As a #HamOnt city councillor I brought the first 2-way street conversions to our city in my ward. I know ensuring our collective safety on the roads takes forward-thinking and collaboration. We have a collective responsibility to make sure we all feel safe on Hamilton’s streets,” Horwath tweeted on July 16, after learning that a child had been injured at a busy stop.
After four attempts as leader of the party to defeat first Liberal and then Tory governments, Horwath moved aside to give the party a fresh start.
While the NDP maintained official party status in the June 6 provincial election, it did so with fewer MPPs than in the 2018 election.
The Ontario Liberals, who are also in the hunt for a new leader, chose MPP John Fraser as their Interim Leader, a position he filled previously after former premier Kathleen Wynne resigned.
