A Rhode Island sports bar is facing major backlash and has apologized after a Facebook posting on Friday that made light of the death of Holocaust victim Anne Frank.
The New York Daily News says Atlantic Sports Bar and Restaurant initially shared a Frank photo alongside the caption “It’s hotter than an oven out there and I should know,” during an East Coast heat wave.
The eatery pulled down the message over the weekend, according to the Newport Daily News, which published the bar’s apology on Monday.
“The post was poorly thought out and we realize that it was incredibly inappropriate and does not reflect our values as members of our community,” that statement reads.
“We appreciate the outpouring of support, as well as the outpouring of rightful criticism. This will certainly be a teachable moment for our team.”
Frank died at age 16 in a concentration camp during the Second World War and while the Nazis did use ovens to burn the bodies of some Jews killed in work camps, she actually died from complications related to typhus.
One person on the review site Yelp.com voiced their displeasure about the whole matter: “Nazi jokes about killing Jews is not a good look for any business. I hope this causes the business to close.”
