Smile: City photo radars capture 54,200 speeders

Toronto photo radar cameras issued over 54,200 speeding tickets just in April and May.

One device on Mill Road north of Burnhamthorpe Road spit out 5,545 tickets in April, including 14 to one lead-footed driver.

“The City of Toronto continues to deploy its full arsenal of Vision Zero measures, including speed cameras, to combat speeding and other dangerous and illegal driving behaviours,” Mayor John Tory said in a statement Tuesday. “Whether or not there is a speed camera or police officer doing traffic enforcement, I urge every driver in the city to follow the law – obey the posted speed limit and all rules of the road.”

The Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) devices were moved around the city in May, meaning fewer tickets were issued — 20,052 in May compared to 34,152 the previous month.

An ASE device on Parkside Drive in the Parkdale-High Park area issued the most speeding notices in May — 2,845 tickets.

The most tickets to a single motorist in May went to a speeder who managed to set off the device 11 times on Redgrave Drive west of Martin Grove Road.

Speeding in a Community Safety Zone comes with a $5 per km fine for going one-19 km/h over the limit, $7.50 per km for 20-29 km/h over and $12 per km for 30-49 km/hr over.

Motorists nabbed flying 50 or more km/hr over the posted speed limit in a community safety zone get a court date with a Justice of the Peace.

A victim fine surcharge, which increases with the size of fine, gets slapped on too along with any applicable court costs.

If an ASE catches a driver, no demerit points are issued by the Ministry of Transportation.
