A man accused of killing his wife on their honeymoon in Fiji allegedly fled the murder scene on a kayak and was found three days later.
Bradley Dawson and Christe Chen Dawson, from Memphis, Tenn., reportedly got into a “heated argument” before the tragedy. The new wife was later found beaten to death in the bathroom of their hotel room and Dawson allegedly claimed it was an “accident,” the Daily Mail reported.
He then allegedly took off in a kayak to an island about a mile from their resort and was found 36 hours later.
Chen’s bloodied body was found on the bathroom floor by the couple’s personal butler, who alerted management and they contacted police.
The victim suffered multiple traumatic injuries and blunt force trauma to the head, according to medical report viewed by the Mail.
“Something surprising happened,” Dawson’s lawyer, Iqbal Khan, told the outlet. “Bradley’s okay now but he was really distressed when it happened. Last week he was in a desperate condition but he’s picking up now. It is a horrendous thing to happen on your honeymoon.”
Dawson has maintained his innocence, though one local claimed, “there was a heated argument.”
Khan, however, insisted, “There is no way he can be convicted of murder. No way. Full stop.”
He explained, “On the evidence that they have presented so far, there’s no proof of the charge of murder with intention to kill or premeditation. Nothing of that sort whatsoever.”
Khan added: “On the face of it, it looks like an accident but I will be able to confirm that once I get the full disclosure next week and get in front of other witnesses.”
Dawson and Chen were married in February but delayed their dream honeymoon at the Turtle Island Resort until July.
Chen died two days into the trip.
Khan has been in contact with Dawson’s mother.
“All his family and friends are devastated, because he was a nice quiet fellow,” his attorney said. “He’s never been involved with the law before and then this happened. This is something new.”
Dawson is set to appear in court again on July 27.
