The European-market Tesla Model Y netted a “near-perfect” 98-per-cent score in the Safety Assist category in its most recent trial of European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP) safety tests, as well as an overall five-star rating. The latter was achieved thanks to a 92-per-cent score overall; its closest competitors, the Lexus NX and Subaru Outback, topped out at 89 per cent.
That score reflected the car’s ability to protect adult and child occupants; avoid injury to defenceless road users; and the utility of the SUV’s safety assist features. According to the Euro NCAP results, the made-in-Germany Model Y scored:
97 per cent in adult occupant protection
87 per cent in child occupant protection
82 per cent in vulnerable road user (pedestrian)
98 per cent in safety assist
“The Model Y, built in Tesla’s Berlin Gigafactory, scores an impressive 97 per cent in Adult Occupant Protection and near-perfect 98 per cent in Safety Assist, with full points for its lane support and new cabin camera-based driver monitoring system. In Euro NCAP track tests, the Model Y camera-only Vision system performs remarkably well in preventing collisions with other cars, cyclists and pedestrians,” Euro NCAP said in a statement.
Euro NCAP conducts new-car safety testing on behalf of multiple European Union countries. It tests for frontal impact, lateral impact, rear hits, child safety features, and how likely severe impacts with pedestrians or cyclists are to occur.
