DA COSTA: Little-known Stubbs hits jackpot in South Africa

Little-known Tristan Stubbs hit the jackpot and two of South Africa’s best-known players were left scratching their heads after being left on the outside looking in at the inaugural SA20 auction.

One would have expected South Africa’s Twenty20 captain Temba Bavuma and Test skipper Dean Elgar to be among the first to be inked by one of the six clubs but they were given the cold shoulder. This was embarrassing for the two captains who lead the Proteas. A total of 318 players went under the hammer and each club had a purse of US$2 million to fill out their squads with 17 players – 10 local and seven internationals for the tournament that will launch in January 2023. It may sound strange but the teams are owned and financed by six Indian Premier League clubs in a bid to help the game grow in the Rainbow Nation. Two leagues started in South Africa previously went the way of the dinosaur. The cash splurged this time may not be near IPL standards but it is high enough to make a huge impact on the lives of many South African players. IPL has churned out several millionaires and is head and shoulders above any league.

Stubbs laughed all the way to the bank after Sunrisers Eastern Cape won a bidding war to land the all-rounder for US$520,000 after being listed at $10,000. Stubbs made a name for himself after smashing a 28-ball 72 against England in the first T20 at Bristol earlier this year. That was good enough for the Proteas to include the 22-year-old in the Twenty20 World Cup squad and he was also signed up by IPL’s Mumbai Indians.

The other homegrown youngsters who also made waves at the auction were the 22-year-old Jansen twins – Marco and Duan – and the 24-year-old Donavon Ferreira.

The 6-foot-9 Marco has already established himself as an all-rounder on the Test squad and he will join Stubbs at Sunrisers after being snatched up for $344,000. His brother Duan was picked up by Cape Town for $186,000. The hard-hitting Ferreira like Stubbs also created a stir at the auction. He was listed at the base price of $10,000 but was snapped up by Super Kings for a mind-boggling $310,000.

ENGLAND STUNS PAKISTAN

England returned to Pakistan after 17 years and pulled off a memorable victory by four wickets and four balls to spare in Karachi. In an exciting finish, England takes a 1-0 lead in the seven-match series that will serve as a tune-up for next month’s World Cup.

Alex Hales made his first return to the team in three years and made his mark with a superb 53 and fast bowler Luke Wood in his debut for England impressed with three for 24 as Pakistan was restricted to 158 for seven and England replied with 160 for four. Pakistan got a flying start in Karachi with Mohammad Rizwan slamming 68 and skipper Babar Azam making 31 but the middle order failed again before Iftikhar Ahmed thrilled the fans with three sixes in his 28 off 17 balls.

AUSSIES ON TOP

Cameron Green made Australia’s selectors look a little foolish for dropping him from next month’s Twenty20 World Cup squad. The hulking Green powered the Baggy Greens to a huge four-wicket victory with four balls to spare over India before a packed crowd at Mohali on Tuesday. The 23-year-old all-rounder was controversially left out and was surprised as he was promoted to open the batting for the first time and he did not disappoint. He lit up the skies in Mohali with four sixes and eight fours off just 30 balls as the Aussies chased down India’s best-ever T20 score against them with four balls to spare. Wicket-keeper Matthew Wade, who came in at No. 7, was at his brilliant best with an unbeaten 45 with two sixes and six fours as the visitors reached 211 for six. The defending champion once again highlighted India’s shortcomings. India’s bowling unit was clobbered by the Aussies with Bhuvneshwar Kumar leaking 52 runs off four overs and Harshal Patel 49 runs. The only Indian bowler to come out of this match untarnished was spinner Axar Patel who took three for 17. India got its runs from the usual stars – KL Rahul (55 off 35 balls), Suryakumar Yadav (46 off 25) and Hardik Pandya who finished with a flourish with three consecutive sixes off Green to post 71 off 30 balls in a knock that included five sixes and seven fours. The teams play another six T20s.
