A Houston amateur boxer was shot dead after he accompanied a woman meeting with her estranged husband to discuss the terms of their divorce.
Maurenzo Smith, 44, was with the unnamed 28-year-old woman when they met her 61-year-old husband at a restaurant.
The exes spoke for about 20 minutes before the situation escalated, resulting in the man leaving the restaurant and allegedly returning with a gun, KRIV reported.
He allegedly fired off 13 rounds inside the Crab Station Oyster Bar, hitting Smith multiple times but missing his wife, who escaped physically unharmed.
The suspect fled the scene, but was stopped by deputies nearby, according to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.
He got out of the car and shot himself in the head, cops said.
The identities of the estranged spouses have not been released but police say they had no children and were married for nine years.
Smith was a local celebrity heavyweight boxer scheduled to fight in Colombia next week, reported the outlet.
According to Smith’s sister, Ida Carter, her brother spoke to the suspect the day before the meeting.
“I don’t know the conversation,” she said. “But when my brother got off the phone, he said that everything was OK, the gentleman was a cool guy.”
Smith leaves behind four children, according to the GoFundMe page started by one of his sisters.
“My brother was like an innocent bystander,” Carter said, clarifying that her brother was not the woman’s boyfriend. “He was just trying to help someone.”
