A mother was seriously injured after she tried to fight off a tiger attacking her 15-month-old son in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh on Sunday.
BBC News reports Archana Choudhary fought the animal with her bare hands for a few minutes in a village field on the outskirts of the Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve.
The Times of India says the tiger had sunk its teeth into the baby’s head and was trying to pull the child away when the mother came to the toddler’s rescue and nearby villagers heard her screams and eventually drove the tiger away with sticks.
A doctor told BBC Hindi that both the mother, who had a punctured lung and deep wounds on her body, and son, who has wounds on his head, were being treated in the intensive care unit at hospital in the city of Jabalpur and had been given anti-rabies injections.
