Michael Stone is angling to extend his stay at the Saddledome.
The Calgary Flames announced Monday that Stone will attend training camp on a professional tryout offer.
The 32-year-old defenceman is a familiar face for the Flames. He’s been on the roster for the past six seasons.
Stone’s presence at training camp will put the pressure on the other candidates to be Calgary’s spare blue-liner. Stone has already proven to be a dependable option in that role. To earn another contract with the club, he’ll have to out-perform the likes of Dennis Gilbert, Connor Mackey, Nicolas Meloche and Jusso Valimaki.
Stone, who plays a physical brand and has a wicked slap-shot, had totalled 35 goals and 134 points in 504 career outings at the NHL level. He suited up for 11 games last season — watching 71 more from the press-box as a healthy scratch — and also made nine appearances in the 2022 Stanley Cup playoffs.
