Michigan hunter survives bear attack in Alaska thanks to bear spray

Bear spray proved to be a life-saver for a Michigan hunter who was attacked by a grizzly bear in Alaska on Tuesday after approaching her and her three cubs.

Alaska Wildlife Trooper said in a statement that Nicholas Kuperus, 33, was left with serious puncture wounds on his arms but it could have been so much worse, reports the New York Post.

The statement says Kuperus stumbled onto the mama bear and her family while he was with other hunters about 96 kilometres north of Glennallen in the upper East Fork Indian River.

They were able to call troopers for help via a satellite communication device and the rescurers flew to a nearby ridgetop in a small state aircraft to take Kuperus to an ambulance in Glennallen.

The Anchorage Daily News says a few days earlier, a hunter was attacked by an adult brown bear near Anchorage that he mistakenly believed he had shot and killed.
