Province says GTHA residents happy to use credit cards for transit fares

The Ontario government will expand the use of credit cards to pay transit fares across the 905 area after what it called a highly successful pilot project.

More than 100,000 people have used their credit cards to tap onto GO Transit and some municipal transit systems — including Brampton Transit, MiWay, York Region, Hamilton Street Railway and Oakville — since August.

“Improving the PRESTO fare payment system by allowing riders to simply tap on with their credit cards is yet another example of how our government is bettering the transit experience, respecting taxpayers’ money and helping people get to where they need to go,” Ontario Associate Transportation Minister Stan Cho said in a statement Thursday.

“Our government is making transit an appealing, convenient and simpler option for people across the Greater Golden Horseshoe,” Cho added.

The plan is to extend the use of credit cards and debit cards for fares throughout the Greater Toronto and Hamilton areas by 2023.

Many transit systems have been trying to bring back pre-pandemic ridership levels.
