Teacher accused of stunt driving in Durham Region

Durham Regional Police tweeted Tuesday about their first alleged stunt driver of the new school year: a teacher.

The individual was charged with driving 95km/h in a 50 km/h community safety zone, so that’s going to be a hefty fine.

“First stunt driver of the day……a teacher!! 95 km/h in a 50km/h community safety zone. Numerous charges laid. #durhamvisionzero,” police tweeted Tuesday.

No doubt to the surprise of police, the response from the public was not positive — many who commented on the tweet wondered why the police would mention someone’s occupation or comment on charges that have yet to be tested in court.

Some wondered if it was part of a political wave of disrespect toward teachers and nurses in the province.

One twitter comment is fairly typical of the responses:

“What business is it of the public’s? Stop trying to embarrass your community. Especially part of the community that could be teaching your officers’ children. Grow up, no one cares but your commander.”

Likewise, this person asks: “Hey why are you releasing the occupation of the person charged?

One or two who commented spoke out in favour of the tweet, noting that police have repeatedly emphasized the need for extra road safety with children going back to school on Tuesday.

Around lunchtime Tuesday, Durham police stopped another driver going over 100km/h and tweeted about it:

“Driver weaving in and out of traffic at speeds in excess of 100km/h. Blew by traffic unit. Failed to stop for police. Eventually stopped and charged. Vehicle impounded.

This tweet drew a more positive response.
