WARMINGTON: Cop killer had loaded gun, wicked plan and extreme patience

This cop killer got himself cleaned up with a shower before embarking on his deadly murder spree.

In the hours before inflicting death and destruction, photos of Sean Petrie show a pensive, emotionless look on his face. But just four hours before he began his shooting rampage — starting with the murder of Toronto Police Const. Andrew Hong — the 40-year-old went to his gym for a shower and, perhaps, a workout.

After about 45 minutes inside the Good Life Fitness in Meadowvale Mall, where he had a membership, Petrie drove 10 minutes north to a Tim Hortons on Argentia Rd. and waited in his parked car for more than two hours.

“We are trying to determine where he spent the night,” a police source said. “We know it was in his car but we don’t know the location.”

A change of clothes is one detail being examined.

Security footage shows Petrie leaving the gym with a red athletic bag over his shoulder, wearing dark clothing and headware. Contrast that with images from inside the Tim Hortons where he is not wearing a hat but is dressed in a yellow construction vest.

It is not believed Petrie had worked in construction but police are trying to piece together the mystery of why he committed the heinous crimes and whether the rampage was planned or spontaneous.

What they do know is Petrie was determined enough to spend more than two hours waiting for a victim, shoot another man and steal his car rather than escape in his own, head 13 km to Milton to shoot three more people, then drive 34 km to Hamilton where he died in a cemetery after an exchange of gunfire with Halton and Hamilton cops.

Police are digging into what kind of gun and ammunition Petrie used and where they were obtained?

“We know updated numbers show 90% of crime guns are smuggled in from the United States,” Halton Regional Police Chief Steve Tanner said Thursday. “The gun is with the SIU but will be sent for testing to learn its history.”

Police want to know more about Petrie’s dealings and movements.

Between going to the gym, changing up his appearance and clothing, the stoicism, fortitude, endurance, calmness, and composure to be able to bide his time and methodically map out and execute the logistics of his wicked plan, police know there are more twists and turns to come.
