Susan Moore thought her cat Harriet was long gone.
The feline had disappeared from Moore’s California ranch nine years ago but then she got a call from the Idaho Companions Animal Centre shelter, reports PEOPLE.
“We found your cat,” Moore told local Idaho newspaper the Coeur d’Alene Press. “We found Harriet.”
The far-flung feline was found in Hayden, Idaho on Sept. 19 by someone who brought her to the shelter who scanned for a microchip and then called Moore.
“When (the family) answered and we told them we had their cat, they were speechless,” Vicky Nelson, Development Director at Companions, told the paper.
Turns out Harriet was just a kitten when Moore rescued her from a shelter to be a “good barn cat,” but two years later Harriet disappeared without a trace.
Moore told the paper she searched high and low for the cat and contacted shelters and checked lost pet websites while her husband thought coyotes had killed her.
She remains intrigued about how Harriett ended up so far away and hypothesizes that the curious kitty either snuck onto her husband’s horse trailer or she was found by a neighbor who moved to Idaho.
Moore says Harriet most likely had another owner while she was away and unless someone turns up to claim her, they’ll be reunited.
“I would love to leave her where she is at,” Moore told the Coeur d’Alene Press. “She really doesn’t belong to me. She belongs to somebody else.”
