Marco Carducci’s journey this year was remarkable.

From a life-threatening scare to a solid comeback as goalkeeper of Cavalry FC, the brave young man from Calgary capped the Canadian Premier League campaign with a grab of the Golden Glove Award.

Friday’s news makes him the CPL’s ‘keeper of the year for the second time in his career.

“We are all delighted for Marco to be get this award,” said Cavalry GM/head coach Tommy Wheeldon Jr. “We see the work he puts in day-in and day-out with the team and our goalkeeping coach Jordan Santiago. His performances on the pitch continue to emphasize that he’s one of the best Canadian ‘keepers out there. Winning this award is made even more remarkable and truly shows his incredible mentality, given how he faced and beat testicular cancer early this year. He is a remarkable young man that continues to raise the bar for human and high potential, and we are fortunate to have him represent our club and this league.”

The 26-year-old Carducci missed the early part of the CPL season while waging a war against testicular cancer. He was diagnosed with it just days ahead of Cavalry training camp to start the year. And once the discovery was made, the medical experts quickly got to work on his situation. Less than 48 hours from his diagnosis on Feb. 16, Carducci was through surgery and back home in recovery.

After missing three games of the schedule, he returned to put on quite the show for the Calgary troops.

Nobody had more clean sheets — 10 — on the season than Carducci. Forge FC’s Triston Henry recorded 10, as well, but played three more games.

“All of us here at the club are very proud of Marco for his second Golden Glove Award in the last four years,” Santiago said. “It is a credit to him as a professional with the amount of work he puts into perfecting his craft every day on the training pitch and in matches. Statistically, he is getting better each season, and we are proud to have him as a part of Cavalry FC.”

The Golden Glove Award is based on regular-season league matches, with voting commencing immediately following the end of the regular season. Carducci was given the award during the league’s award ceremony in Ottawa on Friday night after being voted by league-selected members of the media.
