The New York Jets hit some turbulence but were quick to adjust on the fly this week.
During last week’s win in Denver, rising-star rookie running back Breece Hall suffered a torn ACL, ending his promising season just as it really started to get going.
Hall was RB7 overall and had scored 12+ points in every game except the opener, peaking with 26.7 points against the Dolphins in Week 5. For keeper purposes, Hall should be ready for the start of the 2023 season and will likely be taken in the first three rounds of your draft.
As for the rest of 2022, managers with Michael Carter had a few hours where they looked like they had stumbled into a potential high-volume RB, but the Jets had other plans.
New York traded for James Robinson, who had fallen out of favour with the Jaguars and didn’t have a touch last week against the Giants. Coming off a torn Achilles in 2021, Robinson showed no ill effects this year, starting the season with three big games before the Jags started phasing him out for Travis Etienne Jr. With the sophomore impressing, Robinson became expendable.
The Jets will reportedly take it slow with Robinson as he learns the playbook, but there’s a chance that he takes on the featured role before the end of the season.
In Jacksonville, Etienne should be an every-week RB1 option with JaMycal Hasty now the handcuff.
DIAL TONEY
After one and a half largely disappointing seasons, the Giants cut bait with Kadarius Toney and traded him to the Chiefs for some draft capital.
Toney has played just two games this season and has been plagued by injury throughout his young NFL career, but the sophomore has already claimed that he is in fact good to go. With Juju Smith-Schuster and Mecole Hardman set for free agency after this season, the former first-round pick has a chance to be a real weapon in the Chiefs’ high-powered offence and should be picked up in any league if he’s on the wire.
In New York, look for Wan’Dale Robinson to continue his rise to fantasy relevance. The rookie has been putting up decent numbers after his own injury issues to start his career.
CHASE HIP-CHECKED
Just when the Bengals passing game was really starting to take off, a hip injury to Ja’Marr Chase will likely put the brakes on that a bit.
Chase is out at least four weeks with a hip injury and it could be even longer. At least one report said the star WR’s season may be over.
The injury couldn’t have come at a worse time for the Bengals’ momentum. Chase had racked up 262 yards and four TDs over the past two games and had been the top-scoring WR in Weeks 6 and 7.
While Joe Burrow will be missing his favourite target and had been on a roll of his (71.7 total points over the past two weeks), he does still have Tee Higgins and Tyler Boyd as high-end receiving options.
Higgins was already a must-start thanks to his high floor – he has at least five catches in five straight games and has at least 70 yards in four of them – while Boyd should see a big increase in workload. Both should be in your starting lineup against Cleveland on Monday night.
FAST STATS
Only three WRs have at least 40 targets and zero drops this season: Tyler Lockett, Adam Thielen and George Pickens … In his return from suspension last week, DeAndre Hopkins had 10 catches on 13 targets for 103 yards and a 50% target share … Steelers TE Pat Freiermuth has 216.7 career fantasy points, which is 0.4 more than the highly touted Kyle Pitts … Freiermuth has been targeted on 25% of routes by Kenny Pickett, third-most among TEs. His 1.89 yards per route run is fourth among TEs … Packers rookie Romeo Doubs is down to 5.6 yards per target, third worst among qualifying WRs … Austin Ekeler has no carries inside the five-yard line, but has eight TDs. He also only has two games with 40+ rushing yards and he’s averaging fewer yards per game than Daniel Jones and Taysom Hill. But, Ekeler is third in the league in receptions and tied is for 10th in targets … Last week, Chiefs rookie Isaiah Pacheco got the start and outsnapped Clyde Edwards-Helaire 18-17, but it was actually Jerick McKinnon who led the team with 23 snaps. Looks like we’ve got a full-fledged committee in K.C.
SIT/START
Sit Aaron Rodgers, QB, GB at BUF — The reigning MVP has yet to score more than 17 points in a week and the Bills have given up the sixth-fewest points to QBs.
Start Tua Tagovailoa, QB, MIA at DET — The Lions are bottom of the league in points allowed per game by a whopping 3.7 over the next-worst team.
Sit Zach Wilson, QB, NYJ vs. NE — In his two games against the Pats last year, Wilson scored a total of eight fantasy points.
Start Rhamondre Stevenson, RB, NE at NYJ — Even with Damien Harris back, Stevenson remained the Pats’ featured RB and has shone in the role.
Sit Najee Harris, RB, PIT at PHI — Is averaging just 3.3 yards per carry this season and has yet to reach 12 points in a week.
Start DJ. Moore, WR, CAR at ATL — The Falcons have given up the most points to opposing WRs and Moore is coming off his best outing this year.
Sit Drake London, WR, ATL vs. CAR — As you’ll see in our stat corner, the Falcons aren’t passing enough to trust London with a start.
Start Irv Smith Jr., TE, MIN vs. ARI — The Cardinals have given up the second-most points to opposing TEs, including six TDs this season.
STAT CORNER
Marcus Mariota’s 21.4 passing attempts per game are similar to numbers from 1946 , when teams averaged 21.3 per game. Despite trailing large for most of last week’s game, the Falcons attempted just 13 passes.
ADD OF THE WEEK
Greg Dulcich, TE, DEN — Since making his season debut in Week 6, Dulcich has thrust himself into the streaming conversation at TE, with 19.5 points over his two games played.
DROP OF THE WEEK
Jeff Wilson Jr., RB, SF — With the addition of Christian McCaffrey, Wilson again drops to a backup role and will tumble further down the depth chart when Elijah Mitchell can return.
WAIVER WIRE DEFENCE
Indianapolis Colts — While the offensive struggles have been well-documented, the Colts defence has done well, averaged 10 fantasy points over the past three games. Indy should get close to that against Washington.
