Florida man who cross-examined ex-wife at rape trial gets life in prison

A Florida man who fired his lawyer so he could cross-examine his traumatized ex-wife at their rape trial was sentenced to life in behind bars.

Trevor Summers, 45, fired his legal team last month so he could personally cross-examine his ex, Alisa Mathewson.

The sadistic former spouse was convicted of sneaking into Mathewson’s home in March 2017 in a murder-suicide attempt.

Summers was accused of hogtying her with Christmas lights and sexually assaulting her during the horrific two-day ordeal.

“You broke into my home in the middle of the night… attacked me and tied me up,” Mathewson said in response to one of his questions, according to the New York Post.

“Yes, you threatened me to have sex with you. You raped me!”

“So you’re calling it rape?” Summers asked.

“It is!” Mathewson said. “That is the definition of rape. To come into someone’s home and attack them and tie them up and then have sex with them! That is the definition of rape!”

Summers took Mathewson and they drove to a marina where he planned to charter a boat, murder her, then take his own life.

Mathewson tried to escape and get help when her ex stopped at a Walgreens store.

Police were called by a store employee but Summers managed to shove her back in his car and took off.

Mathewson testified that Summers cut her wrist as punishment for trying to escape.

He then slashed his own neck and attempted to choke Mathewson to death as police arrived and arrested him.

Summers’ life sentence came a month after a trial that saw the sicko represent himself for the remainder of the trial, which allowed him to cross-examine Mathewson and their children.

Hillsborough Circuit Judge Christopher Sabella told Summers he didn’t begrudge Summers’ decision to represent himself, the Tampa Bay Times reported.

“However, I do believe the timing of your decision was born of pure evil, which is not surprising,” the judge said. “Given the circumstances of this case, the testimony and evidence that I have heard clearly make you a monster in every stretch of the imagination.”
