‘I PLAYED WITH HIM’: MLB legend Kirk Gibson shuts down Barry Bonds critics

Kirk Gibson knows a thing or two about Barry Bonds.

He should, as the two were teammates on the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1992.

In an interview with TMZ Sports, the ex-MLB player and manager said the accomplishments of players such as Bonds, Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa shouldn’t be trashed due to alleged steroid use because “people go down different roads in different ways.”

“I’ve played with Barry,” said Gibson. “You gonna tell me the guy didn’t accomplish anything?”

Gibson told TMZ Sports that two decades from now it might be popular to say that Bonds “was no good.”

“How do you know what anybody does?” Gibson said of their accomplishments.

His comments on his former teammate’s accomplishments came after being asked whether Aaron Judge’s 62 home runs this season were the real deal considering Bonds, Sosa and McGwire, who are ahead of Judge on the single-season home run list, were suspected of using performing-enhancing drugs.

Gibson won two World Series — one each with the L.A. Dodgers and Detroit Tigers — during his 17-year career. He later became a coach with the Tigers and is currently a colour commentator with the team.
