Rivian gets approval to market EV trucks in Canada

It’s fall in Canada, the season’s turning, the leaves are dying, but EV manufacturer Rivian is standing taller than ever north of the 49th parallel. That’s because this week, Transport Canada certified and registered the automaker to sell its trucks and SUVs in Canada, as per an Automotive News Canada article.

The green light comes a few days after electric vehicle site Drive Tesla reported Rivian hadn’t met the necessary requirements to deliver in Canada. Thankfully for consumers, that was reversed the next day. The quick turnaorund is attributed to Transport Canada simply needing additional information and documentation prior to certification, as per an email to Automotive News Canada from Rivian.

Transport Canada’s Preclearance List of Recognized Vehicle Importers now lists both the R1T (Truck OEM) and R1S (MPV) as certified.

Initially, Rivian was to make its EVs available in Canada this past July, but that was pushed back. Despite now having clearance, Rivian says there’s no specific date for when consumers can pick up their pick up, or expect first deliveries.

With the Ford F-150 Lightning on roads now, and the gargantuan Hummer EV trickling into Canadian driveways – and don’t forget the fabled Tesla Cybertruck, which good ol’ Elon now says can double as a boat – and more coming soon, Rivian’s presence in Canada gives electric-truck buyers here even more options, which is always a good thing.
