SIU investigating Toronto cops' firing less-lethal firearm at 55-year-old man

The province’s Special Investigations Unit is probing the discharge of a less-lethal firearm by a Toronto cop during an interaction with a man in Etobicoke on Friday.

The watchdog said Toronto Police were called to the area of Royal York Rd. and The Queensway around 8 p.m. for reports of a man carrying a knife and causing a disturbance.

Upon arrival, police said a 55-year-old man fled east to Wesley St. and was soon located.

The SIU said police tried to communicate with the man and at some point two officers discharged conducted-energy weapons at the man.

The SIU said a third officer deployed his less-lethal fiream, resulting in the man being struck.

He wasn’t seriously hurt and was taken into custody, the SIU said. However, the man became unconscioius shortly after his arrest and first aid was administered, the SIU said.

The man was taken to hospital where he regained consciousness.
