The odds are that the Habs are worse — not better — after drafting Slafkovsky with the No. 1 pick

It is way too early to call Juraj Slafkovsky a first-round bust. But despite landing the No. 1 overall pick — and adding Kirby Dach, Sean Monahan and Michael Matheson to the up-and-coming roster  — the Montreal Canadiens remain no closer to becoming a playoff team.

In fact, they might actually be worse.

That’s according to BetOnline.ag, which in a four-month span dropped the Habs’ championship-winning odds from 66-to-1 to 150-to-1, with the team expected to finish last in the Eastern Conference.

The Winnipeg Jets, who stripped Blake Wheeler of the captaincy last month, also downgraded its odds from 40-to-1 to 66-to-1. So did the Vancouver Canucks’ odds —  down from 55-to-1 to 60-to-1 — after forward Brock Boeser underwent surgery on his hand.

Somewhat surprisingly, Ottawa’s chances increased only slightly — from 66-to-1 to 60-to-1 — after an off-season where the team added forwards Claude Giroux, Alex DeBrincat and goalie Cam Talbot.
