Actress Alyssa Milano tweeted about a Volkswagen versus a Tesla and got schooled by social media users.
The actress was flamed by such conservatives as Lauren Boebert and MAGA Barbie on Twitter after she posted a note about giving up a Tesla for an electric VW car.
Milano, star of such TV series as Who’s The Boss, Mistresses and Charmed, tweeted on Saturday:
“I gave back my Tesla. I bought the VW ev. I love it.
“I’m not sure how advertisers can buy space on Twitter. Publicly traded company’s products being pushed in alignment with hate and white supremacy doesn’t seem to be a winning business model.”
Her tweet sparked an immediate pile-on from people wanting the actress to know that Volkswagen began as a pet project in Nazi Germany.
“Volkswagen was literally founded by the Nazi’s [sic] and Hitler.”
That response prompted Elon Musk to weigh in with a laughing emoji and “100.”
Many on Twitter posted vintage photos of Adolf Hitler, some that included Milano’s image thanks to the magic of photoshopping.
A few replies offered alternative views of the situation. One commenter wrote:
“In the way that you guys talk and laugh is very insulting towards Germans. Volkswagen is a much better brand than Tesla. By the way, I remind you that U.S. used chemical weapons in Vietnam, massively, much later than WWII. So be careful comparing to Nazis.”
In June, Bloomberg published an article about VW giving Tesla a run for its money. Tesla still sells more electric vehicles, but VW is apparently working to close that gap.
