Calgary police investigate group assault that left woman in life-threatening condition

Calgary police are investigating after a woman was found unconscious and badly beaten along Stephen Avenue on Wednesday.

The victim was located in the 100 block of 8th Avenue S.W., in the downtown core, around 12:30 a.m.

Police say it's believed she was assaulted by multiple people.

The victim was transported to hospital in life-threatening condition, but has since progressed to serious condition, according to police.

Further details about the victim have not been released by police.

Police have also not yet released any information regarding suspects in this incident.

ON EDGE DOWNTOWN

The attack occurred on the Stephen Avenue Walk, which is a destination for Calgary nightlife.

It has added to a sense of unease for some Calgarians who live and work in the area.

"We partner up. We just send an extra person, a guy or a girl, to double-up walking around this area wherever they park," said Francis Martinez, the chef at FinePrint.

A resident not far from the Calgary core says she also chooses not to walk alone.

"It's not a great time. I usually get one of the boys from work to walk me home because it’s sketchy if I don't," said Keersten Cherenkoff.

Anyone with information on the attack is asked to call the Calgary Police Service's non-emergency line at 403-266-1234 or contact Crime Stoppers anonymously.
