City of Toronto to open 52 ice rinks as part of its welcome to winter

The City of Toronto will start opening outdoor ice rinks Saturday including, for the first time, a pilot ringette program at six locations.

Toronto intends to open 52 outdoor rinks across the city over the next two weeks, including 38 Saturday.

The city says in a statement that participants six years of age and older can drop in to give Ringette a try.

“Ringette is a non-contact sport played on an ice rink with a ringette ring and ringette stick,” a city statement released Friday says. “Pre-enrollment is not required and, beginning in early December, participants will be able to borrow equipment from select locations.

In an effort to encourage women’s participating in hockey, the city says it also intends to provided dedicated time slots for women’s shinny.

“I’m delighted the city’s Welcome T.O. Winter program is back this year. We want people to be able to enjoy our parks and other outdoor spaces as much as possible year round,” Mayor John Tory said in a statement. “This year, there are many exciting winter activities residents can enjoy including skate trails, toboggan hills, outdoor rinks and much more. I welcome and encourage everyone to explore and experience Toronto’s beautiful parks and recreational activities through the winter months.”

The Welcome T.O. Winter programs includes 143 locations with washrooms available throughout the winter months — 52 park washrooms, 47 outdoor rink washrooms and 44 locations with portable toilets.

Residents can also book one of 24 fire pits or one of five outdoor bake ovens.

Seven disc golf locations will also be open.
