One pedestrian dead, another critical after struck by vehicles in Brampton

Peel Regional Police say one pedestrian is dead and a second who tried to help suffered critical injuries after they were hit by multiple vehicles in Brampton.

Police received a call around 5:45 a.m. Friday reporting two pedestrians had been hit at the intersection of Heritage Rd. and Steeles Ave.

Cops say the first woman was crossing southbound when she was struck by an eastbound vehicle. The pedestrian landed in the westbound lanes, where she was hit again by a westbound SUV, then she was hit by a third vehicle. The 41-year-old woman died at the scene.

A second pedestrian who tried to help was also struck by the SUV and third vehicle. The 30-year-old woman was sent to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Cops say the drivers of the first and third vehicles stayed at the scene, but the driver of the mid-sized SUV continued westbound on Steeles before emergency crews arrived and is being sought.

An Amazon fulfilment centre is located nearby and Amazon Canada spokesperson Ryma Boussoufa told CTV News the victims are both employees there.

“We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of our colleague, and we offer our heartfelt condolences to their loved ones. Our thoughts are also with our employee who is currently in hospital,” Boussoufa told CTV News.

“We are providing support resources for the victims’ families and our workforce. We are also offering our full cooperation to local authorities.”

The intersection will be closed for an “extended period” while police investigate.
