Best celebrity quotes of 2022: 'My nickname was Death Grip'

Over the past 12 months, Postmedia sat down (mostly virtually) with dozens of Hollywood stars and got their thoughts on everything from career longevity to mispronouncing Toronto. From our first interview of the year with Ben Affleck to our final conversation with Avatar filmmaker James Cameron, here’s a look back at some of our favourites.
“I genuinely didn’t know that was a thing until a few years ago. I grew up eating that all the time. It’s pineapple, ham and jalapeno, and people are freaking out? What’s wrong with that? Why aren’t people freaking out about anchovies on pizza?” Stranger Things’ breakout star Eduardo Franco makes a case for putting pineapple on pies (for the record his colleague Millie Bobby Brown says no thanks)
“I think the biggest asset that one can have is self-belief. Regardless of what you’re hearing on the outside, it’s about what you feel on the inside. Nobody knows what you’re capable of more than you. So, for me, it’s always been about hunkering down and staying true to the goal at hand. If I do that, I’ll get the results on the other side.” Kevin Hart shares the key to his success
“Any time it’s mispronounced to Torontonians, we apologize.” Woody Harrelson offered a mea culpa for the many mispronunciations of Toronto in his comedy The Man From Toronto
“I can’t tell you how many people who have cats say to me, ‘But my cat is just like a dog.’ And I always think, ‘Well, then just get a dog.'” Don’t try and convince Chris Evans he needs a cat in his life
“He needed to die. It’s like Romeo and Juliet. It’s a movie about love and sacrifice and mortality. The love is measured by the sacrifice.” Oscar winning director James Cameron is begging you to stop debating Jack Dawson’s death in 1997’s Titanic
“I think you always have something to prove. People say to me, ‘You have nothing left to prove,’ and those are just words. In your insecure brain there’s always that notion that (makes you wonder), can you still do it? Do you still have it? If you don’t do it, are you going to be forgotten? All these little idiosyncratic, fearful things you have percolating around in your brain keep you moving on.” At 76, Sylvester Stallone says he feels he still has something to prove
“It might make me emotional if I think about that too much. He’d be shocked … For me, statistically, I didn’t think this was in my cards. So if I could go back and talk to that young Dwayne, I’d put my arm around him and tell him, ‘It’s all good, man. Let me show you what we’re going to do one day.'” Dwayne Johnson on what Young Rock would think of where he ended up
“I don’t ever think of a character as a hero or a coward … there’s a complexity to every character that I’m anxious to include in my performance.” Don’t ask Harrison Ford if the character he’s playing is good or bad – he’s just trying to have fun
“I was like, ‘Man, they’ve been listening to thousands of people singing all day long. They’re probably just going to send us all home because they’re tired.’ But I went in and they gave me a piece of paper that got me to the next level. I was so excited and I had no idea, obviously, that it was going to lead to all of this.” Seventeen years after she won American Idol, Carrie Underwood reminds us to always count on the unexpected happening in life
“I got a package of clothes that were all my brother’s hand-me-downs, and inside that package was some underwear that I don’t even think had been washed.” No matter how bad your gift was this year, Ryan Reynolds’ all-time worst gift has you beat
“We get defined by our choices, and one of the things that’s hard to see from the outside is your choices are also a function of your options. You’re choosing an option off a menu, but you can’t just order asparagus if they don’t have that at the restaurant.” If you’re wondering why Ben Affleck doesn’t play more romantic leads, here’s your answer
“By the way, Dracula turned 30 yesterday. I’ll let you and your wife work out how old you were and where you saw it.” Gary Oldman reminds all of us that we are, in fact, getting old
“My nickname was Death Grip. I think it’s because I was the slowest, but I was so determined to stay in there.” Jennifer Connelly’s cross-country running buddies in college gave her a nickname that still makes her laugh
“Even though I felt we could have gone longer, I also think that the legacy you leave is based on the last thing you do, and we had a great night on a great tour, and that was a show we were really proud of.” Rush’s Alex Lifeson with a reminder to always do your best to leave a lasting impression
“It just felt like the creativity that went into it seemed like not working at all.” Find something you love doing and you’ll never work a day in your life, Tom Hanks says
“It felt at times as if I was about to walk across the Grand Canyon on a tightrope.” Playing the King was no easy thing for Elvis star Austin Butler
Pig. I loved that movie. I think with that movie I finally had entered the room.” Nicolas Cage reveals the one film of his he hopes people are still watching 50 years from now
“I’ll wait for the fans to say, ‘No thanks, we’ve had enough of you.'” Chris Hemsworth is going to keep playing Thor until you tell him to stop
“I don’t know where it is, but I think it’s safe.” Andrew Garfield doesn’t know where his Spidey costume is hiding out
“If I smile a little too hard and I sprain my cheek and my face leaks a little bit, I’ll apologize for it right now.” The Whale star Brendan Fraser wants you to know if you see him crying in a movie theatre in the coming months it’s definitely tears of joy
