Biggest multi-million lottery wins in the Greater Toronto Area in 2022

As the end of 2022 approaches, a number of Greater Toronto Area residents can reflect on how life-changing the year was.

The GTA gained many new multi-millionaires thanks to big lottery wins.

Topping the list, if you include someone who collected this year, but actually bought the ticket last December, was Manoharan Ponnuthrai. Ponnuthrai won the Dec. 17, 2021 LOTTO MAX draw worth a cool $70 million.

He had been playing the lottery for 30 years, but won on a Quick Pick ticket, not his own numbers.

Ponnuthrai collected on January 11. He purchased the ticket at a Circle K in Brampton.

The second-biggest haul of the year went to Ancaster’s Leah Murdoch-Gerics, who bought a winning $60 million LOTTO MAX ticket on OLG.ca for the April 19 draw. Murdoch-Gerics became the largest LOTTO MAX winner who bought a ticket online.

Nishit Parikh, of Toronto, took home $55 million from LOTTO MAX from the August 5 draw.

The winning ticket was purchased at Petro Canada on Markham Road in Scarborough.

Garry Myles, of Oakville, won a $22 million LOTTO MAX jackpot on January 18. It’s one of the biggest prizes won with a ticket purchased on OLG.ca, they said. Myles had been playing for around 20 years, but switched to a subscription purchase so that he wouldn’t forget to buy tickets and it paid off.

Steven Dixon, of Toronto, took home $20 million from the July 9 Lotto 6/49 draw. He had been playing the same numbers for 36 years, he said.

Julian Richards bought a winning Lotto 6/49 ticket in Mississauga worth $7.1 million.

Jane Evans, of Vaughan, won a top prize of $1,000 a day for life with Daily Grand in the May 16 draw, but opted for a $7 million lump sum.

There was also a $6 million Lotto 6/49 jackpot purchased in Etobicoke in the June 4 draw and four $5 million Lotto 6/49 wins from various draws, three of them coming in September or October.

And a unique winner was Jeffrey Gurczenski, of Mississauga. While Gurczenski didn’t cash in for as much as the others, he can incredibly say that he won both $150,000 from a Bigger Spin Instant ticket and $91,000 on a Poker Lotto All in game just months earlier.
