DIRTY DOME: Rogers Centre among dirtiest in North America, says study

Hopefully, the renovations will breathe clean life into the Rogers Centre.

Because heading into the $300-million facelift, the home of the Toronto Blue Jays didn’t have the reputation for being one of the cleanest.

According to a study conducted by Betsperts, the stadium formerly known as Skydome ranked eighth in the top-20 dirtiest sports venues in North America in 2022.

The study looked at Yelp reviews on each venue’s hygiene that featured the words “dirty,” “gross” and “filthy” and divided them by the total number of reviews posted. It also looked at the number of food safety violations based on the percentage of food outlets in each stadium with stats provided by ESPN.

The Betsperts study looked at stadiums with more than 100 reviews.

So what was the dirtiest venue on the list? According to the study, RingCentral Coliseum — the home of the Oakland Athletics — was the worst, with an unfortunate tendency to flood with sewage. It resulted in 4.2% of visitors stating how dirty the venue is.

Ranking second is the home of Washington Commanders, FedExField, with fans most critical of the dirty and poorly-maintained bathrooms. The Wells Fargo Center (home of the Philadelphia 76ers and Flyers) ranked third, with fans pointing out the venue’s dirty floors, pest problem and dirty bathrooms.

The Rogers Centre wasn’t the only Canadian-based venue on the dirty list. Tying for ninth place is Rogers Place in Edmonton, Alta.

While there are plenty of dirty sports venues across North America, there are tons of clean ones too!

The Betsperts study named seven venues as the cleanest venues: PNC Arena (Raleigh, N.C.), Enterprise Center (St. Louis, Mo.), Bank of America Stadium (Charlotte, N.C.), TIAA Bank Field (Jacksonville, Fla.), U.S. Bank Stadium (Minneapolis, Minn.), Xcel Energy Center (St. Paul, Minn.) and Coors Field (Denver, Colo.).

The first phase of the Rogers Centre renovations recently starting with the gutting of the 500 level seats and the demolition of the outfield. It’s slated to be complete ahead of the Blue Jays’ home opener next year.

The renovations to the 33-year-old Rogers Centre hope to bring new amenities and improve facilities for athletes and fans alike.
