LEAFS NATION: Toronto ranks in top 10 cities to be a hockey fan

The Toronto Maple Leafs have always been known for their diehard fanbase.

So it should come as no surprise that Toronto ranks as one of the top 10 best cities in North America to be a hockey fan, according to a study produced by Betsperts.

The study ranks Toronto sixth out of 10 of the top cities. The Big Smoke sits one place behind Montreal, which ranks fifth with its Canadiens fandom.

So how did Betsperts come to this conclusion? The sports betting website looked into specifics from each city, which included number of sports bars, sporting venues, average cost of food and beverages, each sports team’s average win percentage over five years and the number of championships they won.

Of the top 10, Denver, Colo., placed first in the rankings with an average fan score of 7.46 out of 10. Pittsburgh, Tampa and Boston and the aforementioned Montreal make up the top five.

The Betsperts study noted Tampa Bay is home to the team with the best average win percentage (65.87%) over the last five years — the Lightning. Toronto’s average win percentage is 59.13% while Montreal falls behind with 40.47%.

The average hocket fan score across North America was 4.77 out of 10, which ranged from 7.36 for Denver and 5.50 for Washington. Montreal and Toronto scoring 6.00 out of 10 respectively.
