A PITTANCE
Re “Money for nothing” (Brian Lilley, Dec 7): I’ve got three guys two houses up from me: Grades 10, 11 and 12. They’ve never had a part-time job and only go to school when they have to pass. All three collected CERB benefits and not for just the 28 weeks — they collected some in the second year as well. Bought TVs, cars, electronic stuff. Dad got hurt at work on the last day before benefits started so got to collect benefits for the entire time as well. I’m a senior on a fixed income and I got a one-time payment of $600 from good ol’ Justin Trudeau during that same period. What gives?

LEGALLY BOUND
I concur with your Dec. 6 editorial criticizing the Trudeau government bill which would ban many types of rifles and shotguns used by hunters and farmers (“Liberal gun control measures off target”). Most shootings in Canada are committed by criminals using illegal handguns smuggled in from the U.S. This proposed legislation does nothing to address that reality and is off the mark. Law-abiding hunters and farmers are not responsible for gun violence in this country. It’s clear that they’re being unfairly targeted by the Trudeau Liberals.

WHO CAN OWN IT?
I applaud the move to try to create affordable housing by opening up areas previously NIMBY’d and waiving development fees for those homes. Does anyone know how this move is not going to be exploited by investors? How will they stop these homes from being gobbled up by foreign and domestic investors whose only goal is to expand their land holdings portfolio and bank account?

AN ACT OF REBELLION
The Alberta Sovereignty Act, like it or not, is a direct result of Prime Minister Justin (“We can’t shut down the oil sands tomorrow. We need to phase them out”) Trudeau, Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault, and Quebec Premier Francois Legault interfering, impeding and denying Alberta’s ability to develop and export its natural resources. What that cabal doesn’t understand is that, for example, in December 2020, of Canada’s total oil production of 4.939 million barrels per day, 3.789 million bbl/d, or 77%, was exported with about 95% of that going to the U.S. Thus, only about 23% of the 70 or so MMTPA of GHG emissions from the oil sands can be attributed to Canada’s use of oil sands production. Imposing an onerous emissions cap on oil sands production, let alone ‘phasing them out,’ would reduce the strategic and largest supply of oil that the U.S. imports — never mind knee-capping Canada’s economy.
