EARTH’S ENDURANCE

Re “Trudeau gov’t accepts and parrots climate misinformation” (Matthew Lau, Nov. 30): Lau makes some good points on climate misinformation and the need for more education on climate change. As Earth scientists like me fully appreciate, climate change is a natural phenomenon that has been going on throughout Earth’s history on various time scales. Over the past 3 million years, the Earth has endured at least three or four ice ages, when most of Canada was covered by an ice sheet a mile thick. This was caused by variations in solar radiation and in the Earth’s orbit called Milankovitch cycles. So, if excess CO2 causes global warming, that might be a good thing for Canada! More Canadians, especially the prime minister, need to be educated in Earth science to better understand Earth’s history and the natural causes of climate change as well as geology and how to identify new critical minerals resources to benefit the economy.

TURN DOWN THE HEAT

Watching question period and the Liberal government doesn’t understand that people are hurting between heating and eating, so why don’t they turn the heat off in the House of Commons, so we all can see their Canada Goose coats.

SEIZE THEM

Trudeau has already been getting strong push back from the Official Opposition and four Conservative premiers. We hope Carey Price speaking out about Trudeau’s attack on target shooters, hunters and farmers by seizing rifles and shotguns will bring more pressure. While Trudeau prefers to virtue signal to his urban voting bases, police in Toronto seized a large number of handguns recently that were being smuggled from the U.S.A. So, while the police are going after the real source of gun crimes, Trudeau is aiming at those shooting paper targets, a food source or predators to protect their farm animals, not shooting other humans. Even some members in the NDP see Trudeau’s actions as a massive overreach! Trudeau, who seems to know zero about firearms generally, cannot seem to realize gang-bangers prefer easily concealed handguns, not the rifles and shotguns that he wants to see seized!

(Trudeau doesn’t care, he makes these pronouncements to sound good to a certain segment of the voting population. They give no consideration to the practical reality of implementing such policy)

COP28

Re “COP27 deal delivers landmark on ‘loss and damage,’ but little else” (Reuters, Nov. 20): Sometimes, in the face of backsliding or defeat, the more subtle mark of success is holding the line. At COP27, the quiet victories may have eluded some watchers, but they are victories nonetheless. We can be thankful that in the clash, countries of the world stood strong against attempts by some to renege on the 1.5C global temperature goal from COP26. We didn’t break, and that means we can push forward at COP28.

(Why not try this conference on Zoom and save all those carbon emissions?)
