Brett Sutter, the Calgary Wranglers and their fans had plenty to celebrate on Wednesday night at the Saddledome.
Sutter, captain of the Calgary Flames’ AHL team, marked his 1,000th game in the circuit by scoring the game-winning goal as the Wranglers rallied for a 5-2 win over the Ontario Reign.
Sutter’s sixth goal of the season, a shorthanded tally just over three minutes into the third period, stood up as the winner after the Wranglers had erased a 2-0 deficit. He then assisted on Kevin Rooney’s insurance marker, also while shorthanded, just over a minute later.
Adam Klapka started Calgary’s third-period barrage with a goal just over a minute before Sutter’s tally. Jakob Pelletier got the Wranglers on the board in the middle frame, while Connor Zary completed the scoring. Dustin Wolf made 38 saves for the win.
Sutter, 35, became only the eighth player to log 1,000 appearances in the AHL. He has recorded 182 goals and 260 assists for 442 points in the league.
The Wranglers are now on their holiday break. They return to action on the road against the Bakersfield Condors on Dec. 28. Calgary’s next home game is Jan. 2 (7 p.m.) against the Abbotsford Canucks.
