LAPORTE COUNTY — A Lake Station woman was killed after an intoxicated driver sideswiped the car she was riding in early Sunday morning, Indiana State Police reported.
At about 12:30 a.m. Sunday, ISP troopers responded to reports of a crash on Interstate 94, about three miles west of the Indiana-Michigan state line. According to ISP, 19-year-old Jordan M. Morrissey was driving a 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt westbound in the far-left lane at a high rate of speed. As Morrissey rounded a curve, he crossed into another lane and sideswiped a 2019 Chevrolet Colorado. The impact caused the Colorado to drive off the right side of the road, through a guardrail and down an embankment.
Robert J. Hinkle, 47, of Hobart, was driving the Colorado. Both Hinkle and the front seat passenger were treated for life-threatening injuries. Sarah J. Cantrell, 73, was in the back seat of the Colorado and was unresponsive at the scene. ISP said Cantrell died while being treated at South Bend Memorial Hospital.
ISP Trooper Joshua Luckey said he smelt alcohol on Morrissey's breath and observed "evidence of recent drug use inside the Cobalt." Morrissey, of Wyoming, Michigan, was taken to the LaPorte County Jail and has been preliminarily charged with a number of offenses, including operating while intoxicated causing death, possession of marijuana and minor consumption of alcoholic beverage.
