GARY — A police pursuit ended in a crash Saturday afternoon, according to Indiana State Police.
Portage police officers began pursuing a tan Chevrolet that had been involved in a theft Saturday afternoon. According to ISP, Portage police ended the pursuit after 4:30 p.m. when the car entered Lake County on Interstate 80/94. ISP Trooper Jace Haddon located the Chevrolet near 25th Avenue and Chase Street in Gary. The vehicle fled as Haddon initiated a traffic stop. After a short pursuit, the Chevrolet hit a white SUV at the intersection of 25th Avenue and Colfax Street.
The driver of the Chevrolet, Jonathan M. Riley, of Dolton, Illinois, was taken to Methodist Hospitals Northlake Campus where he was medically cleared before being taken to the Lake County Jail. ISP said a Century Arms AK rifle was found in the front seat area of the car.
Alaylah D. Edmond, 19, was a passenger in the Chevrolet and sustained serious injuries during the crash. ISP said Edmond, of Phoenix, Arizona, was treated at Methodist Hospitals Northlake Campus. The occupants of the SUV were also treated for minor injuries.
Riley, 21, has been preliminarily charged with a number of offenses, including resisting law enforcement with a vehicle causing injuries and reckless driving.
ISP said further charges may be filed against Riley and Edmond by the Portage Police Department.
