2022 produced Canada’s lowest annual auto sales volume since the crisis of 2009, but these 10 vehicles altered their trend lines
Scanning 2022’s sales results to find the most improved year-over-year vehicles, not surprisingly, produces a list that includes two overhauled pickup trucks, two electric hatchbacks, and four family-oriented SUVs. And, less expectedly, a minivan. And a midsize sedan.
While automobile manufacturers continue, in many cases, to report healthy profits despite the lack of product availability, 2022 produced Canada’s lowest annual auto sales volume since the crisis of 2009. The overall picture, however, isn’t an accurate indicator of what transpired among distinct automobile brands, nor does the 9-per-cent overall auto sales decrease from 2021 sales levels provide a clear idea of what occurred with individual models.
Automakers actually reported sales increases with dozens of models. Big increases. Huge increases. Dramatic increases.
In order to discover which vehicles truly altered their trend lines, we limit eligibility to vehicles that average at least 1,000 sales per quarter, vehicles for which their manufacturers report quarterly model-specific results, and vehicles that were on sale throughout the prior year, 2021. (After all, the entirety of a 2022 sales picture is bound to look good in comparison to a half-year of sales results for a new model in 2021.)
Though not the fault of limited demand, Canadians registered only 1.51 million vehicles in 2022, a drop of nearly 150,000 units from the prior year. These 10 vehicles had nothing to do with that downturn.
