There’s a variety of music to be enjoyed around Saskatoon this month, with local performers bringing everything from classical to jazz to alternative hits.
GUSTIN HOUSE

This event is part of a long-running inter-arts series, sharing art and insights with the audience.
“When an artist has the opportunity to play music that has not often, if ever, been performed — or music that hasn’t been performed recently, or that may have fallen out of favour — it’s a tremendous honour, sharing with an audience music that’s new to their ears, and becoming keenly aware of the composers’ intentions and how best to communicate them,” Angell said.
Lyrical Lines is performed at St. John’s Anglican Cathedral March 5 at 3 p.m. Tickets are $25 at the door. Masks are required. Proceeds support artists and Gustin House programs.
ELIXIR ENSEMBLE

Elixir Ensemble presents Inspiring Music from Ukraine — and Beloved Brahms. An homage to the people of Ukraine, the concert features an inspiring piece by Vasyl Barvinsky, one of Ukraine’s most beloved composers, and a heartwarming melody by Johannes Brahms.
“We are choosing to honour and support Ukraine by performing a work by one of their best-loved composers, Vasyl Barvinsky. This is a work of lyricism and passion, incorporating the lively Kolomyika dance style, traditionally danced on festive occasions. The Brahms B major trio we are performing is a work by the young Brahms that contains a depth of emotion far beyond his years. He conveys moments of epic struggle as well as intimate moments of tenderness and love, and it is full of memorable melodies,” artistic director and pianist Kathleen Solose said.
SASKATOON JAZZ ORCHESTRA

“Gershwin was well positioned as a very successful composer of popular, classical and jazz music to envision such a piece and from the very first note — the iconic clarinet gliss(ando) — Rhapsody in Blue was and remains to this day, to be hugely popular. This work is an iconic piece of American music and the SJO is honoured and delighted to be performing and, in so doing, celebrating the work of Gershwin. The highlight of the concert will be this new arrangement of Rhapsody in Blue as we celebrate 99 years of Gershwin,” artistic director Dean McNeill said.
ANDY SHAUF

Saskatchewan-raised, Toronto-based musician Andy Shauf performs from his latest album, The Neon Skyline. The album features 11 interconnected tracks that tell the story of a night out on the town while working through a past relationship. Through these songs, Shauf finds the humanity and humour in a single evening out.
“I’m really excited to play these new songs live with the band. This is the biggest non-festival show we’ve ever done in Saskatchewan, so it should be a really fun night. It’s always nice to come back home,” Shauf said.
SASKATOON SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

“This really is an experience like no other. To be able to experience a live orchestra accompanying a film is something everyone should do. There are so many nuances and complexities within the score you may not have noticed before — but will know and intrinsically understand — and now, with the orchestra live, you’ll be able to experience it all in a really unique way,” MacDonald said.
