"No words can describe what our members and their families are feeling at this moment. Our entire service and community are mourning and I’m devastated"
Two Edmonton police officers were killed Thursday morning while responding to a call in the city’s northwest.
Heavy police presence is contained to the Inglewood and Woodcroft neighbourhoods with much of the activity around the Baywood Apartments near 114 Avenue and 132 Street. Forensics members were combing the area while 132 Street between 114 Avenue and 116Ave has been barricaded. Police tape covers the parking lot in front of building 11445.
“No words can describe what our members and their families are feeling at this moment. Our entire service and community are mourning and I’m devastated,” Staff Sgt. Michael Elliot, former head of the Edmonton Police Association, tweeted just after 7 a.m.
Police Chief Dale McFee and other dignitaries are to address media at 10 a.m. inside police headquarters, 9620 103A Ave. The regularly scheduled Edmonton Police Commission meeting to be held noon Thursday has been cancelled in the wake of the deaths.
An outpouring of condolences from police agencies across the country included a statement from Calgary Police Service (CPS), whose department shared its support on twitter. “With immense sadness and heavy hearts we mourn the tragic loss of two Edmonton police officers killed in the line of duty. We share in the profound grief and loss of the fallen officers. They made the ultimate sacrifice in serving their communities. On behalf of the CPS, we send our deepest condolences to their families, friends and colleagues.”
The last Edmonton city police officer killed in the line of duty was Const. Daniel Woodall on June 8, 2015.
The officer recruited from Greater Manchester Police Force was gunned down while attempting to serve a search warrant on a man at a home business near 186 Street and 62A Avenue around 8 p.m.
