Neither driver was hurt during the incident, which happened south of Montreal, and both cars were retrieved the next day
Two cars participating in an ice race on the St. Lawrence River in Quebec had to be fished out after falling through, with the accident captured on one of the race car’s dashcams, as well as by a drone overhead. Fortunately, nobody was injured, including the drivers.
As the footage shows, both drivers were able to exit their vehicles quickly and safely. Lawrence says the cars were retrieved from the lake the next day.
The ice’s thickness did not factor into the accident, another participant told the news outlet. “We checked the ice the night before, in one corner it was 16 inches, in the other three corners it was 14 inches,” said Derek White. “We won’t go on the ice unless it’s 10 inches thick.”
This is not the first time a lack of ice on the St. Lawrence River has postponed or cancelled an event this year, according to CTV. The Rideau Canal Skateway in Ottawa, which sees more than a million visitors each year, closed early this year because there wasn’t enough ice to create the skating surface, due to warmer temperatures.
Without 10 to 14 straight days of extreme cold, it can be difficult to reach at least 12 inches on the St. Lawrence River, according to the National Capital Commission, which manages the site.
