A Texan-turned-Winnipegger and a local product have earned the community service awards for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.
Willie Jefferson, who has moved his family to Manitoba, has received the Ed Kotowich “Good Guy” Award for football ability, leadership and effort in the community.
“Love what I do and who I’m doing it for!!!” Jefferson posted via Twitter, Monday. “My family and the Community.”
The 32-year-old defensive end is a four-time CFL all-star who was the Bombers nominee for the Most Outstanding Defensive Player Award last season. He won that award in 2019, helping Winnipeg end a 28-year Grey Cup drought.
Running back Brady Oliveira is the winner of the Cal Murphy “Heart of a Legend” Award, which recognizes sportsmanship and dedication to the CFL and the community.
Oliveira, 25, became the Bombers No. 1 ball carrier last season, cracking the 1,000-yard mark by a single yard, averaging 5.0 yards per carry and scoring four touchdowns, adding another 252 yards and a touchdown as a receiver.
The product of Oak Park High School’s off-season work includes dog rescue, both in Manitoba and internationally.
