Letters: Saskatoon city council praised for green cart expansion

Readers offer their opinions on the coming organic waste program in Saskatoon and the military conflict in Yemen.

Our household has been longtime subscribers to the Saskatoon green cart program. We have appreciated the service, knowing that our yard and household waste has been diverted from the landfill.

We understand that the landfill is nearing the end of its usefulness and that developing a new landfill would be costly. We welcome the expansion of the green cart program to include the entire city and applaud city council’s proactive action to extend the life of our current landfill.

Canada perpetuates suffering in Yemen

While we worry over the war in Ukraine, there is another war that is contributing to a high level of suffering. In December 2022, 23.5 million people lacked humanitarian assistance in Yemen, a country that counts 33 million inhabitants.

The main cause of this misery is the war between the Yemenis and a U.S.-backed coalition comprising Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Canada has played a huge role in perpetuating this war by providing over $1 billion in weapons to Saudi Arabia and the UAE every year, according to Canada Peace and Justice Network.

Instead of providing weapons, Canada should: Cancel active and pending sales of Canadian weapons to Saudi Arabia and the UAE, call on the Saudi-led coalition to end its illegal military offensive and encourage peace negotiations.

In addition, Canada should increase its humanitarian aid to Yemen and help to stop the blockade so that food, medicine and other necessities can reach Yemen.
