Man slashed in throat on Surrey bus in life-threatening condition

One man is in hospital clinging to life after he was slashed in the throat while on a bus in Surrey Saturday morning.

A fight broke out between two male passengers on board a bus travelling on Fraser Highway and 156th Street in Surrey, shortly after 9:30 a.m., according to Metro Vancouver Transit Police.

During the altercation, one of the men allegedly took out a knife and slashed the other man across the throat.

Transit police and members of the Surrey RCMP arrived and located the suspect. He was arrested and faces a charge of attempted murder.

The victim was transported to hospital with life-threatening injuries, according to police. So far, police say it appears to be a random attack, however a motive has not yet been determined.

Police say victim services was called to scene to assist any of the passengers affected by the incident, and the bus driver, who was shaken up.

No other injuries have been reported at this time.

The incident took place while the bus, operated by Coast Mountain Bus Company, was in motion at Fraser Hwy and 156th Street. The bus driver pulled the bus over at Fraser Highway and 148th Street.

This stabbing comes just a week after Burnaby resident Paul Schmidt was stabbed outside a Starbucks at the corner of Granville and West Pender streets in Vancouver after asking a man not to vape near his toddler.

Last year, the VPD raised the alarm about an increase in random acts of violence, with many calling for more mental health services to address the problem.
